Senior Delivery Manager
At Alton Valley, we’re looking for an experienced Senior Delivery Manager to lead a programme or sub-portfolio of complex IT projects across secure, regulated and business-critical environments.
- Location
- Derby
- Working pattern
- Hybrid, full time
About the role
You’ll take ownership of delivery against time, cost and quality targets while ensuring the intended programme outcomes are achieved. Alongside managing cross-programme dependencies, risks and commercial performance, you’ll provide leadership, direction and support to our Project Managers.
You’ve reached the stage in your career where delivering your own projects is no longer enough. You’re ready to shape how delivery happens across a wider portfolio, develop other project professionals and influence decisions at a senior level.
This opportunity sits at the intersection of programme leadership, commercial awareness and hands-on delivery accountability.
What you will be doing
- Owning programme delivery against agreed scope, schedule, cost, quality and performance targets.
- Ensuring programme and project outcomes are clearly defined, measured and successfully realised.
- Managing dependencies across projects, programmes, technical teams, suppliers and customer environments.
- Defining and managing the internal Project Management resource profile required to support delivery.
- Leading, coaching and developing Project Managers across core project management disciplines.
- Ensuring Project Managers follow agreed governance, delivery processes and quality standards.
- Working with the Project Management Office to define the management information needed to monitor performance and support informed decision-making.
- Reviewing schedule management, financial performance, risks, issues, change, dependencies and resource requirements.
- Managing escalations from Project Managers, clients and delivery stakeholders.
- Working with portfolio leadership to identify and manage cross-portfolio risks and issues.
- Maintaining strong relationships with clients, suppliers and multidisciplinary delivery teams.
- Supporting requirements management, configuration management, service transition and handover into operational support.
- Applying strong commercial judgement to project decisions, contractual commitments and delivery priorities.
- Promoting continuous improvement across programme management, reporting and delivery governance.
What we are looking for
- Demonstrable experience managing higher-complexity IT projects and programmes, typically valued between £500,000 and £5 million.
- Experience leading teams of Project Managers or other project delivery professionals.
- The ability to coach, guide and develop Project Managers across core project management functions.
- Strong IT-sector experience across the complete project lifecycle, from initiation and requirements through design, build, testing, service transition, handover and closure.
- Strong commercial acumen, including experience managing budgets, forecasts, contractual obligations and delivery risk.
- Excellent programme management, schedule management, risk management and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Experience managing scope, change, project quality and cross-programme dependencies.
- The ability to work effectively within high-performing, multidisciplinary and multi-company project structures.
- Strong communication and engagement skills, with the confidence to manage senior clients, technical stakeholders and delivery partners.
- A delivery-focused approach and the ability to bring structure, clarity and accountability to complex environments.
- A willingness and ability to obtain SC clearance, which is mandatory for access to relevant sites and systems.
Nice to have
- A recognised project, programme or portfolio management qualification.
- Experience delivering programmes within defence, government, critical national infrastructure or another highly regulated environment.
- Current or previous SC clearance.
- Broad IT project and programme management experience covering physical infrastructure, facilities, enterprise systems and digital solutions.
- More than 10 years’ experience within IT project, programme or portfolio management roles.
- Experience working with Project Management Office models, processes, controls and reporting data.
- Experience working for a systems integrator, project integrator, managed service provider or technology consultancy.
